Chipotle Reports on Sustainability Efforts

Chipotle has committed to testing a recyclable or compostable cup and lid (including a strawless option), reducing the amount of plastic in cutlery by 20 percent, and having a diversion program at 100 percent of restaurants by 2020. In addition, it has partnered with Revolution Bag to pilot a program that turns plastic gloves into trash bags. A pilot that began in eight restaurants across Portland, Ore. is now expanding into 17 restaurants in Sacramento, Calif.

Chipotle has reported a 25 percent average reduction in restaurant waste since 2016. Additionally, 100 percent of napkins and paper bags are made with 100 percent recyled fiber and 100 percent of the paper in cups are from Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified sources. Eighty-eight percent of restaurants already have a diversion program, and the company reported a 42 percent reduction in waste diversion from landfills.
