Wegmans plans to reduce in-store plastic packaging and will phase out plastic bags by the end of the year in its 46 New York state stores, reports Buffalo Business First. The move is being made ahead of a new state law that bans plastic bags by March 1, 2020.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans has released a statement saying it will cut single-use plastics, including straws, made from fossil fuels by 2 million pounds this year with a goal of reaching a 10-million-pound reduction by 2024. The focus on sustainable packaging is part of the company's Zero Waste program, an initiative aimed at eliminating all forms of waste at Wegmans stores. The program started as a one-year pilot at the company's store in Canandaigua, N.Y., in 2016, and has since rolled out to a total of 30 stores with more to come. Full Story
