Walmart Creating an Angus Beef Supply Chain

Walmart is creating a supply chain that will serve as a pipeline of no-hormone-added Angus beef for 500 of its southeastern U.S. stores, reports Bloomberg. The retailer is working with rancher 44 Farms and Mc6 Cattle Feeders in Texas, Creekstone Farms, a Kansas-based slaughterhouse, and a Georgia packaging plant owned by Walmart that will be operated by processor FPL Food. Walmart expects this supply chain to trim costs and create about 450 jobs.

According to Scott Neal, Walmart's SVP of meat, seafood, and fresh quality control, this effort is a response to customer demands for transparency. "We are creating a supply chain from the cow-calf side all the way through to the customer. This is an opportunity to look at it from end to end,” he said.

Tyson Food and Cargill supply most of Walmart's beef, and those companies will continue to provide some meat to the 500 stores serviced by this supply chain as well as the retailer's other locations, according to the report. Full Story
