The Trump administration plans to launch a new pork inspection system, reports The Washington Post. It will reduce the number of federal inspectors by about 40 percent and shift their responsibilities to plant employees. Plant owners will have discretion over workers' training for these roles, and pork plants won't be subject to limits on slaughter line speeds.
USDA officials say under this new system, the agency has no plans to test pork for salmonella. USDA will rely heavily on plant owners to conduct pathogen testing. Those companies will not have to publicly disclose the results, and E. coli testing won't be required.
According to a USDA analysis, the new system will save about $6 million a year and plants increasing their line speed by over 12 percent will boost profits more than $2 million a year. Full Story
