Icelandic Eclipses Greek as the New Hot Yogurt Trend

Icelandic-style yogurt sales grew 24 percent to $173.9 million in the last year, while overall yogurt sales decreased 3.4 percent, according to Nielsen, reports Minneapolis Star Tribune. Icelandic Provisions is making a new extra-thick Skyr, launching in July, that's 7 percent milk fat, compared with 1.5 percent for its regular variety.

Although the launch of Greek yogurt helped breath life into a falling category, there has been little innovation since its introduction, according to The NPD Group. Skyr could change that dynamic, but overall yogurt consumption has dropped since 2014, with the average American eating 13.7 pounds. in 2017. Skyr has a potential leg up in the competition, however, as it offers three times the protein and half the sugar when compared to Greek yogurts. Full Story
