Consumers Understand Plant-Based Milk Labeling

Most consumers aren't confused by the labeling of plant-based alternatives using dairy terms, according to an analysis of data collected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, commissioned by the Plant Based Foods Association, reports Forbes. A majority of the more than 7,000 respondents said they want plant-based companies to continue using "milk" and other traditional dairy terms to describe plant-based alternatives.

Just 13.5 percent of consumers called for restricting the use of dairy terms for plant-based alternatives, and 51 percent of those comments came from respondents who identified themselves as dairy farmers.

Nielsen data shows sales of plant-based milk grew 9 percent in 2018, while Mintel found in the five years between 2012 and 2017, plant-based milk sales grew 61 percent. Full Story
