Walmart will acquire San Francisco-based ad tech startup Polymorph Labs. Polymorph's technology will enable Walmart advertisers to quickly select audience segments based on shopping behavior, automate ad delivery, and then measure whether their ads influenced a sale. Walmart also claims Polymorph's server is faster than traditional client-side servers, so customers "will be served advertising that is more relevant and delivered faster."
Meanwhile, Amazon has acquired Canvas Technology, a robotics startup that built autonomous carts that can move goods around warehouses, reports Reuters. An Amazon spokeswoman claims the technology will "further improve safety and the workplace experience." This is not the first investment in automated technology the company has made; it acquired Kiva Systems for $775 million in 2012, which uses robotics to transport shelves of inventory to workers to pick customer orders, and it participated in a $530 million funding round in driverless car startup Aurora Innovation Inc.
