Study: Most Americans Aren't ‘Very Likely' to Buy Clean or Plant-Based Meat

Among people in the world's three most populous countries—China, India and the U.S.—Americans are the least willing to purchase cultured or plant-based meat, reports Food & Wine. In China, 59.3 percent of consumers say they are "very or extremely likely" to purchase cultured meat, and in India 48.7 percent concurred. But in the U.S., only 29.8 percent are "very or extremely likely" to buy lab-grown meat and 23.6 percent say they are "not at all likely" to buy the products.

For plant-based meat, over 62 percent of Chinese and Indian consumers say they are "very or extremely likely" to make purchases. Again, Americans lagged with only 32.9 percent considering the products "very or extremely likely" to make it into their carts. Over 25 percent saying they are "not at all likely" to buy plant-based meat.

Furthermore, the data found that over 57 percent of U.S. consumers say they aren't familiar with cultured meat and 36.4 aren't familiar with plant-based meat. A lot of focus is put on pushing alternatives to traditional meat in the U.S., but the researchers concluded China and India "may represent especially good opportunities to displace demand for conventional meat." Full Story
