About 70 percent of fresh produce sold in the U.S. reportedly has pesticide residues even after being washed, according to the Environmental Working Group's 2019 Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce. Strawberries, spinach, and kale are among the most pesticide-heavy produce, while avocados, sweetcorn, and pineapples had the lowest level of residues.
More than 92 percent of kale tested contained two or more pesticide residues and a single sample of conventionally farmed kale could contain up to 18 different pesticides. Avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, frozen sweat peas, and onions were at the top of the group's Clean Fifteen list, meaning they were the least likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues.
