McDonalds to Stop Fighting Minimum Wage Hikes

In a letter to the National Restaurant Association, McDonalds says it will not longer lobby against minimum wage hikes at the federal, state, or local level, reports The Washington Post. "The conversation about wages is an important one; it's one we wish to advance, not impede," Genna Gent, McDonald's VP of government relations, says in the letter.

In recent years, wage-hike supporters have initiated strikes, protests and started advocacy groups like Fight for $15, applying an increasing amount of pressure on fast food chains, including McDonald's, to take action. Workers have taken the fight to the ballot box and found success, and they're preparing to mount additional campaigns in 2020. Labor advocates view McDonald's changing position as evidence that the tides are shifting in the minimum wage debate.

Terrence Wise, a McDonald's worker and Fight for $15 leader says McDonald's decision to no longer block minimum wage increases is recognition that the position to fight minimum wage increases tooth and nail as the company did for so long is no longer tenable, according to the report. Full Story
