Prescribing healthy foods could help save billions of dollars in healthcare costs, according to a Tufts University study published in PLOS Medicine, reports MarketWatch. The study found that healthy food could prevent as many as 3.3 million medical conditions including heart attacks and strokes, saving between $40 and $100 billion in healthcare costs, according to two models.
Subsidizing fruits and veggies could prevent more than 1.9 million cardiovascular events like heart attacks, while avoiding 350,000 deaths, says the report. Expanding the subsidies to more healthy foods along with fruits and vegetables could prevent 3.28 million cardiovascular conditions, 620,000 deaths, and 120,000 diabetes cases. Full Story
