Health Organizations Call for Sugary Drink Tax

Two health organizations are calling for a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, reports SF Gate. The goal of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics is to limit children's intake of sugar-sweetened drinks, and to launch a state and government marketing campaign educating families on the health risks associated with sugar, as well as better access to nutrition information on restaurant menus.

While both groups routinely warn against high sugar consumption, this marks the first time the American Academy of Pediatrics has broadcast its policy suggestions. "Excess consumption of added sugars, especially from sugary drinks, poses a grave health threat to children and adolescents, disproportionately affecting children of minority and low-income communities," the group said in a statement. Full Story
