Bordeaux Vineyards Aiming for 2025 Environmental Targets

France's Bordeaux winemakers are aiming to be 100 percent sustainable, organic, or biodynamic by 2025, reports Food & Wine. If not, the goal is to at least be transitioning to those practices, says Allan Sichel, president of the Bordeaux Wine Council.

Individual appellations are considering stricter rules. For example, St. Emilion is reportedly planning to add and enforce sustainability regulations early in the next decade and Bordeaux Superior AOC is considering imposing limits on herbicides and pesticides.

Bordeaux has already been trending toward more eco-friendly practices. Sixty percent of all grapes from the region are already sustainable, organic, or dynamic. A decade ago, 30 percent of the substances sprayed on vines were potentially harmful chemicals, but that has dropped to 10 percent. Meanwhile, membership of the Environment Management System— a program that launched in 2010 to allow growers to connect to share sustainability best practices—has swelled from 25 vineyards to 800. Sichel says it shows a total change in the state of mind, according to the report. Full Story
