The Hartford Yard Goats, a minor league baseball team in Connecticut, has banned peanuts from its stadium, reports Food & Wine. Although other teams have taken steps to create nut-free zones, the Yard Goats are reportedly the first professional team to impose a stadium-wide ban. The measure is an effort to address the rise in nut allergies. And in addition to removing peanuts from the concession menus, the stadium will also have signs telling visitors not to bring in outside peanut items.
Management recognizes peanuts and snacks like Cracker Jacks are a staple for baseball fans. Last year, the stadium sold over 10,000 bags of peanuts for $4 each. But they're working on new concession items including caramel corn and pre-packaged gluten-free snacks.
The Yard Goats president Tim Restall says, "The way we look at it, if we eliminate this one item to allow kids to enjoy a baseball game, that's what it all comes down to." Full Story
