Oregon Wine Outpaces California, Overall Industry

Oregon wines continue to post strong retail sales performance, reports Portland Business Journal. According to Nielsen data, the state's wines rose 12.4 percent in dollar value in 2018, outdistancing California sales growth of 1.3 percent and overall industry growth of 1.5 percent.

Pinot noir continues to lead the varietals, with sales up 15.1 percent compared to an industrywide 2.5 percent. Dollar sales of chardonnay, an otherwise flat category, grew 14.6 percent.

The Wine Board noted upward trend in 2017 and again in 2018. According to the organization, Oregon wines have an average price of $16.29 per bottle, selling at more than twice the national average of $7.37. Analysts say this puts the state's wine in the middle of a $15 to $20 category, which is seeing the strongest volume and value growth market-wide.

Oregon wine is also performing well in direct-to-consumer sales, with industry data showing a volume increase of 19 percent in 2018, double the industry rate. Full Story
