New York City Councilwoman Carlina Rivera has introduced a bill to ban the sale of foie gras by restaurants and vendors on the basis of animal cruelty, reports New York Post. If the proposal becomes law, violators would be guilty of a misdemeanor and face fines of up to $1,000 and a year in jail for each offense. Riveria claims the bill is already gaining steam with other council members and she believes it will ultimately secure enough support to become law.
Two restaurant operators noted they felt it was unfair to their business and were worried it would hurt profits. "It's a popular seller — so, sure, I would hate to take it off the menu," says one restaurateur. "Too much government interference." Full Story
