After more than 20 years, Japan is ending its ban on beef from the United Kingdom and will accept products from British cows under 30 months, reports Bloomberg. The nation’s health ministry says the change was recommended by a food safety committee.
The ban was imposed in 1996 to stem the spread of mad cow disease, which killed several people in Britain during an outbreak in the 1980s and 1990s. But fears are about the disease are fading.
A panel of food experts also recommended that Japan lift the age restriction on U.S. beef, which bars cows over 30 months. That measure was also proposed to prevent mad cow disease, according to the report. Full Story
