80 Acre Farms has attracted an investment from Virgo Investment Group. Although the sum wasn’t disclosed, 80 Acre describes it as significant and says the funds will support its effort to rapidly commercialize the indoor vertical farming technology the company has been developing. That includes optimizing the production processes, driving down costs, and completing its automated indoor farming facility in Hamilton, Ohio.
80 Acre says the facility is the first of its kind in North America. Its features include handling robotics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and around-the-clock monitoring sensors and control systems. The facility will allow the company to fulfill the growing demand for locally grown produce from retailers and restaurants year-round.
CEO Mike Zelkind said that the company wants to prove indoor farming can be fully-automated, commercially scalable, higher-yielding, and profitable.
