Cage-free Eggs are Out, Pastured Eggs are In

Sales of pasture-raised eggs jumped 32 percent in 2018 through Oct. 8, according to Vital Farms, reports Omaha World Herald. Free-range egg sales increased 8.5 percent, cage-free eggs 3.9 percent, and caged birds 0.3 percent. At the same time, pasture-raised egg prices are down to below $5 a dozen, compared to $12 a year ago.

Although spurred by consumer demand, analysts note the pricing shift followed 2016 pledges from McDonald's Corp. and Walmart to utilize cage-free eggs. And although prices are going down, standard grade A large eggs averaged $1.78 per dozen in the 10 months ended Oct. 31, according to government data, showing that the $5 price for pastured eggs still commands a premium. Full Story
