The "smart store" market is projected to process more than $78 billion in annual transactions by 2022, according to Juniper Research, reports The Japan Times. Japan-based Signpost will begin selling its cashierless store technology to Japanese and overseas convenience stores, supermarkets and train station kiosks in 2019, while San Francisco-based Standard Cognition aims to have its automatic checkout technology in 3,000 retail locations by 2020, and China-based Alibaba set up a cashierless cafe in Hangzhou.
Japan's retail market is said to be ripe for automated checkouts, as there are more than 55,000 convenience stores offering snacks, drinks and packaged food, and they often struggle to find clerks. Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at Iwai Cosmo Securities Co., notes the labor shortage will likely spur adoption. "They're very fast at developing this technology," says Kawasaki. Full Story
