Many meat-free alternatives are exceeding maximum salt targets, according to London campaign group Action on Salt, reports The Guardian. The group found, on average, that there was more salt in meat-free burgers than real meat burgers. The tested burgers had an average salt content per serving of 0.75 grams, which was lower than the meat-free option at 0.89 grams. In addition, the group claimed one in five of the products tested did not have any front of pack color-coded labeling.
After analyzing information on 157 meat-free products, Action on Salt said that alternatives such as meat-free burgers, sausages, and mince are "concealing" high levels of salt. The saltiest products in the survey were Tofurky's Deli Slices Hickory Smoked and Tesco's Meat Free 8 Bacon Style Rashers. The campaign group called for action from Public Health England to address its concerns, according to the report. Full Story
