Walmart, Kroger, and Target are rolling out inexpensive premium wines, reports CNN. The companies recently tried new brands, partnerships, and delivery choices to attract America's wine buyers. These big-box stores took cues from Costco, Lidl, and Trader Joe's who, years ago, discovered selling cheap wine wins shoppers.
In May, Walmart introduced its private label line, "Winemakers Selection," for $11 a bottle, featuring rosés and vinos from Italy, France, and California. The company got a boost in sales from the line and plans to release 11 more varieties in the spring. Target also had its take on quality wine for low prices in 2017 when it introduced its $5 California Roots brand. Alcohol was the fastest-growing unit in the company's food and drinks division last year and it plans to offer alcohol in 80 percent of its stores by the end of 2018. Kroger, which sells 80 wine lines, will not sell them under its own label, but it is trying to tap into the online alcohol delivery market, according to the report. Full Story
