Pret A Manger Sued over ‘Natural' Claims

Pret A Manger faces a U.S. lawsuit for alleged deceptive marketing and sale of certain bread and other baked goods as "natural food," reports The Guardian. The lawsuit was filed by Beyond Pesticides, GMO Free USA and Organic Consumers Association (OCA), who argue the retailer's products tested positive for glyphosate, which the organizations point out is a component of the weedkiller Roundup.

The plaintiffs argue Pret A Manger exploits consumers' preferences and willingness to pay more for products marketed as "natural." They are seeking full disclosure of glyphosate in Pret A Manger products and/or a reformulation of the products to be glyphosate-free. The OCA cited surveys showing consumers expected the word "natural" to mean pesticide-free products, according to the report. Full Story
