Grocery Shoppers Switch to Aldi

One in five grocery shoppers who switched stores in 2018 chose Aldi as their new store, according to Morgan Stanley, reports Bloomberg. The company attracted more new shoppers than Costco, Target, Kroger, and Whole Foods Market, mirroring Aldi's gains in the U.K., where its market share is 11 percent, up from 1 percent in 2011.

Walmart and Kroger still dominate the U.S. food retail sector, accounting for a combined one-third of the market, compared with Aldi's 2 percent. But Aldi's advance has pushed other chains to cut prices, notes Morgan Stanley. There is also an Aldi located within five miles of about half of all Walmart and Kroger stores,according to the report.
