CA Bans Plastic Straws from Restaurants

California became the first U.S. state to ban plastic straws in full-service restaurants, except by request, after Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill into law Thursday, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. The bill takes effect Jan. 1 but is limited in scope, applying only to dine-in restaurants and exempting fast-food restaurants, delis, coffee stores, and any other outlet that supplies takeout orders. A legislative analysis concluded that the bill is unlikely to "change consumer behavior." However, environmental groups are praising it as a move in the right direction.

Some cities in the state already have their own restrictions on plastic straws, including San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley, Carmel, San Luis Obispo, and Davis. The plastic straw ban follows a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags in 2016, according to the report. Full Story
