Amazon Considers 3,000 Stores by 2021

Amazon.com is considering opening as many as 3,000 new AmazonGo cashierless stores in the next few years, according to sources familiar with the matter, reports Bloomberg. The company is weighing plans to have about 10 locations open by the end of 2018, about 50 locations in major metro areas in 2019, and as many as 3,000 stores by 2021. Opening multiple locations in proximity could help the company reduce costs and centralize food production.

CEO Jeff Bezos envisions Amazon reinventing the brick-and-mortar shopping experience during meal times in busy cities, but he's still experimenting with the format. The convenience store concept would sell fresh prepared foods as well as a limited grocery selection similar to 7-Eleven franchises, or the store would serve as a place to grab a quick bite, according to the report.
