Starbucks is entering the plant-based protein category with the launch of Protein Blended Cold Brew in almond and cacao flavors, reports USA Today. The non-dairy, 16-ounce frozen drinks are made from pea and brown-rice protein, and will be available through the fall while supplies last. Starbucks positioned these blended coffees as an extension of the chain's Cold Brew line, which was introduced three years ago.
The almond drink is made with almond milk, almond butter, and 12 grams of plant-based protein. While there's no refined sugar in the drink, the sweetness comes from what Starbucks refers to as a "Banana Date Fruit Blend" as well as coconut sugar. The cacao drink is made with coconut milk, cacao powder, and 10 grams of plant-based protein. The drinks are being sold in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, customers can request to add a shot of plant-based protein to a different drink, according to the report. Full Story
