SoftBank to Invest up to $750 Million in Robot Pizza-Making

Japan's SoftBank Group is currently in discussions to invest between $500 million and $750 million in Zume, a California startup that uses robots in its pizza preparation and delivery process, according to people familiar with the matter, reports Bloomberg.

The company's co-founder, Alex Garden, claims he designed robots that can mimic the movements of human workers to spread pizza sauce in a manner that recreates the experience of eating a handcrafted slice. Zume holds a patent for delivery trucks that can cook food while en route to customers. Robots help to load the trucks, and the trucks have ovens on board that fire up on demand when they receive a remote cloud signal. Three of these trucks are currently operating from the company's Mountain View headquarters.

Zume also created technology to manage perishable supply chain logistics, and the company believes it may be attractive to companies wanting to provide freshly cooked food to customers. Ultimately, Zume hopes to partner with companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash, and SoftBank could help take the startup's concept global, according to the report. Full Story
