Sainsbury's Opens First Cashierless Store

Sainsbury's has opened a cashierless convenience store in London, which will run a pilot of the technology for three months. The store is tailored to customers buying breakfast or lunch and other food to eat on-the-go, featuring ready-to-eat products, snacks, and self-service coffee.

Customers will scan their groceries as they shop using the SmartShop Scan, Pay, & Go app, pay in the app, and scan a QR code before leaving.

The store was refurbished to remove the checkout area. The store will have a helpdesk to support anyone who wishes to pay with cash or cards. Currently, 82 percent of transactions in this London convenience store are cashless.
